Console System: Personal Computer

Company: Sierra

Status:(Completed)

Approx Time: (About 15 hours or so)

Sierra has made many interesting games. From Gabriel Knight, Kings Quest, to Quest to Glory. Phantasmagoria is one interesting game. Picture yourself in Poltergeist the movie. This is what this game emphasizes. This is an old game, I know. But I am reviewing all the games I've played in the past and up til now as much as I can. Phanta is an interesting game because this game uses real people, props, and video. Your main character, Adrianne, and her husband Don just purchased a huge house. The fact is, this house is an old magician's house. Don begins to work on his next photographic project. Since Adrianne has not much to do, she decides to explore the house.

This game is incredibly huge in content. The game spans in over seven CDS. There's a lot of exploration, surprises, and video to explore an unlock. As Adrianne explores the house, more and more creepy and unusual stuff happens. Soon enough she learns that this house is too much for her or Don. Without ruining much of the story (let alone the surprises!), you have to find a way to escape the 'curse' of the house itself. The game's simple controls is simple point and click interface. Simply put your mouse over to something and if Adrianne can do something the mouse will highlight.

There's a lot of interaction in this game with people as well. Phanta is a good game and feels like your in a movie. There are a few bad aspects of this game. First off, if your one of those types that beats a game and puts it down for life, this may not be your cup of tea. Phanta does offer puzzles, but they aren't really difficult. The puzzles make sense, and just practically DO EVERYTHING aspect is strong in this game. Keep exploring, you'll figure it out. If you do happen to get lost, a hint keeper will tell you where to go next. He's very straight forward. He isn't really a good hint keeper, he more tells you what you need to do straight-forward.

The games save bookmark system is a bit of a drag, as only 1 save can be made per player slot. Also, you can start directly near the game of the game and beat in less than 15 minutes. Why Sierra did this is beyond me. This would have been implemented better if this was offered as an unlock-able feature after completing the game. The game is pretty stable for an old school game. Computers running any of the Windows environments (that includes XP/2000) can run pretty damn stable. All in all, from start to finish, Phanta will take the average player little under 5-10 hours on the first run. This is a good game replay value wise if you're in the nostalgic mood of old school PC games. This is a good Sierra game, I hope they make more. Phanta is worth a good $20 or so. If your looking for a spooky, Poltergeist like game. Give Phantasmagoria a try.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Graphics: 0.700/1.000: (The video is slightly poor quality, but its still understandable. The house is pretty good and detailed. Somewhat dark in some areas but not too bad.)

Sound: 0.900/1.000: (Being an old school game, the voice acting can get poppy sometimes and a little fuzzy. However, the in game music and spooks make this up extremely well!)

Storyline: 0.750/1.000: (While a little vague in the beginning, the storyline becomes more and more interesting. If you're playing this for the first time, I highly recommend that you don't start in chapter 7 :( .)

Control: 1.000/1.000: (Everything interacts well point and click. I had no issues control wise in Phanta.)

Gameplay: 0.500/1.000: (It is interesting to see this kind of game. Everything is done so well. However, not everyone may like this game. This game comes up short and can be accomplished very quickly.)
